This yearlong course is designed to enhance students' expertise in debate through critical reading, advanced research, and rigorous argumentation. Students will study advanced theories of logic and engage in the evaluation of evidence, while developing skills in original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, and impromptu speaking. The course will also cover the structure and preparation for various debate formats, including Lincoln-Douglas, policy debate, public forum, and legislative debate. Participants will utilize professional research tools, such as Lexis-Nexis and JSTOR, to analyze national and international issues. Students will conduct individual research projects, applying college-level research methods, with an emphasis on philosophical analysis, fallacies in reasoning, and organizational strategies. All students will be required to participate in the debate team as part of their course engagement. This course may be taken each year up to three times.
