Advanced Journalism

This is a one-to-two-semester course that further explores media writing and other aspects of journalism necessary to produce newsworthy content on real topics, for real audiences. Students will work on real-world journalism projects, collaborate in a team environment, and assume editorial leadership positions across Valley’s various mediums, including print, digital, and broadcast. In addition to refining and deepening their understanding of media writing and production, students will also develop their leadership and entrepreneurial skills by managing advertising, marketing, and business operations of journalistic production.

Students will determine a medium path (newspaper, yearbook, or broadcasting and newspaper)  to focus on as well as a particular role within the team. Students interested in assuming editorial leadership roles should take this course as early in their high school career as possible.

This course is ideal for students planning careers in journalism, media, communications, marketing, or other communication-driven pathways, and can be taken more than once.
